Overview

Position – Radiologist Consultant

Location – Wollongong

Wollongong is a coastal city in Australia, south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive. Surfing beaches and rock pools line the coastline. Trails encircle the forests and rocky cliffs of Mt. Keira in the Illawarra mountain range, which frames the city. To the north, hang gliders launch from Bald Hill. South lie the Buddhist temple of Nan Tien and Lake Illawarra, a large lagoon with boating and fishing facilities.

Primary purpose

  • To provide specialist radiology services across the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District and to deliver these services in a way that will best meet the clinical needs of the patient and the diagnostic and/or interventional requirements of the referring clinician.
  • To actively promote and participate in educational forums and to instruct, supervise and support radiology JMOs and other clinicians to ensure that service provisions are safe, accurate, appropriate and timely.
  • To provide consulting services to clinical units and referring colleagues, including attendance at, and active participation in, multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • To maintain and further develop the knowledge base, clinical competencies, practical procedure skills research basics and self-education habits required of a specialist radiologist.
  • To participate in the on-call consultant roster.
  • To actively participate in quality improvement processes including quality requesting, image quality assessment and feedback, and personal effectiveness and development activities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The provision of high quality, efficient, safe, customer focused radiology services.
  • Compliance with established policies, protocols and clinical standards for the provision of radiology services.
  • Compliance with radiation safety requirements relevant to the practice of Radiology.
  • Compliance with recognised clinical standards and those determined by the Clinical Director of Radiology ISMI.
  • Represent ISMI Radiology at clinical meetings, and consult with medical and other health professionals.
  • Provide radiology reports on images and to undertake Radiology procedures as required.
  • The provision of clinical consultations as required.
  • To participate in education relating to Radiology, including referring practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate medical, medical and allied health programs and other ISLHD Staff.
  • Active involvement in quality improvement, enhanced productivity, service development and revenue generation.
  • To participate in an after-hours and weekend duty roster.
  • Take all reasonable care for the health and safety of the patients and staff.
  • To advise as needed the Clinical Director, Division of Radiology regarding equipment procurement.
  • To work across all sites of the ISLHD as required for effective service provision.
  • Participation in Mandatory Training programs such as Fire, Disaster and other Emergency procedures.
  • Other duties appropriate to the level and responsibility of this position

Clinical Effectiveness and Quality Improvement

  • Strives to ensure the service works effectively with other services so as to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Supports processes that enable clinical staff to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supports the use of protocols and standards so as to underpin clinical safety and performance.
  • Drive continuous quality improvement activities and initiatives within the service, and encourages staff innovation.
  • Ensures clinical practices are of excellent standard.
  • Works to ensure relevant KPIs and clinical indicators are implemented, monitored and met.
  • Supports continuing education and appropriate research activities.
  • Supports the auditing of practice standards within the service.
  • Supports the development and monitoring of quality indicators.

Service Delivery and Development

  • The Staff Specialist Radiologist:
  • Works constructively with the Medical Imaging team to ensure the service is performing effectively and efficiently.
  • Works with the leadership team to plan and develop initiatives to improve effectiveness of the service.
  • Works constructively to ensure the service achieves targets consistent with RANZCR Practice Standards.
  • Is involved in the design and development of services.
  • Works constructively with the Medical Imaging team to develop workforce plans that will support the current and planned service requirements, address supply, role development, staff retention and professional development.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Radiology and eligible to hold an appropriate NSW radiation license from NSW Environmental Protection Agency.
